System 2/90 was founded by Charlie Tyke, who has designed many familiar products, including Stanley power tools, Little Tikes Toys and office furniture components for Westinghouse Furniture Systems. As a consulting product designer for Westinghouse, he designed System 2/90 to meet corporate needs for identification and direction in open plan office environments.
Charlie determined that his signage system must meet two key criteria:
1) It had to be capable of meeting all office requirements such as people and department identification, directional information, and directories.
2) The signage had to be readily modified as individuals changed. Ease of ordering and speedy delivery were also fundamental considerations.
1979: As a result, Open Plan Accessories (OPA) was incorporated and its first product line, System 2/90 Signage System, was introduced at the 1980 NEOCON tradeshow in Chicago.
1986: OPA expanded into a larger facility and introduced an innovative three-part sign system made up of an internal structural rail, replaceable ABS plastic face inserts, and end caps that could be easily removed, no tools required.
These elements were modular in design and size, and signage configuration options were unlimited!
The open plan office was originally System 2/90's target market, but others such as general building structures, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, government offices, and international users emerged and greatly expanded the company's markets.
1989: To better address the success of OPA's penetration into other markets, the company changed its name to System 2/90, Incorporated. Serving a broader customer base, new product features were added to include aluminum and wood inserts, color match options, and a variety of copy and end cap selections. More sign styles were added, including framed, freestanding, in/out, quad and exterior signs.
1998: As a well-established leading manufacturer of high quality signage, System 2/90 relocated to a brand new 80,000 square foot facility in Grand Rapids, and changed its corporate identity to 2/90 Sign Systems.
Today: Still committed to outstanding product quality and responsive lead-times, 2/90 Sign Systems is a premiere signage company used by building professionals.
